Earth Day 2022!

It is a day to celebrate our Earth and promote responsible Earth stewardship. Earth Day is held on April 22nd every year. The purpose of Earth day is to create an educational, engaging, and impactful week to help students shed light on environmental issues and celebrate our planet Earth. Earth week is celebrated between April 18  - April 22, 2022

Earth day theme for 2022: Invest In Our Planet

Children can pick one of the below activities each day and:

  • make a poster
  • make a collage
  • write one page
  • create one slide using padlet (padlet.com) – free software

Earth day activity is open for kids of all grades.

EARTH WEEK IDEAS:

These ideas can be done at school and at home. Share a photo or write a paragraph about your activity! Email your writeup or poster to Pallavi Kalale: sustainability@smithptsa.org before April 30 2022.

  1. Tidy up: Clean up school playground by picking up trash and recyclables
  2. Bring your own: Remember to get your own water bottle, cutlery for school
  3. Zero waste lunch: Pack only what you can eat and waste less during school lunch
  4. Turn off: remember to turn off lights when you leave your classroom or any room in your house
  5. Open the curtains: Open the curtains and can let in enough light so that you don’t need artificial lighting
  6. Paper towel challenge: use only one paper towel to dry hands after every hand wash at school
  7. Recycle bins: Create recycling bins in classroom and encourage friends to use empty them daily
  8. 3R’s: Students can share with their families the “3-R” about reducing, reusing, recycling waste
  9. Walk: If weather permits, walk or bike to school during Earth week
  10. BYOB – Bring your own bags. Remind your family to take reusable bag during grocery shopping.  Remember to say “no” to plastic bags at the grocery store. Keep reusable bags in your car
  11. Get outside. Take some time to walk and appreciate nature
  12. Take shorter showers. Reduce you water usage by opting for a 5-minute shower
  13. Read: Read books about the earth and nature
  14. Gardening: Plant a tree or work in your garden. Look for an indoor sunny spot to grow herbs
  15. Print double sided to save paper: Set your printer setting to double sided.
  16. Separate trash: Separate dry and wet waste at home
  17. Art project: Try a fun art project using bottle caps, paper towel rolls, old clothing, printer papers or anything else. Sky is the limit to art
  18. Rethink: Students can think about what they can do at school and at home to help the environment and how they can encourage others to change their habits.
  19. Bird Feeder: Make a bird feeder from cardboard using items from kitchen pantry
  20. Educate: talk to at least one friend or a family member to raise awareness about earth week
  21. GOOS: Make you own notepad or sketch book from paper printed on one side. Its called Good On One Side papers
  22. Fix leaks: Look for leaky faucets at home and ask an adult to fix it
  23. Collect rain water: Collect water when it rains and use rain water for your garden
  24. Compost: Look at ways to turn kitchen waste into compost
  25. Donate: Donate old toys, old books or old clothes to a charity
